Subject Description
MIT8202 Fundamentals of Cybersecurity introduces students to the fundamental concept of cybersecurity. Students learn the importance of cybersecurity in protecting information assets from unauthorised access or misuse. The subject will provide students an understanding of the cyber threat surface and common attack and penetration testing, defence strategies, risk management, governments acts and regulations, and industry standards. Through practical scenarios and case studies, students will develop the capability to respond effectively to cybersecurity incidents and report to managers for strategic decision making.
Subject Type
☒ Core
Study Mode: Face to face on site
Study Load: Full-time
Learning Topics
- Cybersecurity principles, controls and standards
- Network and application security
- Cyberattacks, malware and cryptography
- Security testing and introductory penetration testing
- Risk, privacy and business continuity
Subject Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of confidentiality, Integrity, and availability.
- Detect and interpret a passive and active reconnaissance with well-known security tools in a KALI LINUX environment.
- Design methods and techniques for risk assessment and analysis based on international frameworks and industry standards such as NIST, ISO/IEC 27001, PCI-DSS and others.
- Compose security management strategies including risk analysis, implementation, incident handling and maintenance while working in a team.
- Investigate and assess legal and ethical issues in cybersecurity.
Assessment
AIIHE uses a variety of assessment tools to guide and assess each student’s achievement of the subject learning outcomes. In this subject, students undertake students will be given practical work in class to critically assess them on the topics studied in order to examine and demonstrate their working knowledge of cybersecurity and information, in-class practical assessment (individual), and students will design a comprehensive software and network penetration testing report for a financial organisation based on a provided organisation scenario. These tasks assess the knowledge, applied skills, critical analysis, communication and collaborative capabilities relevant to the subject.
Summary of Assessment
- Students must attempt all assessment tasks, and achieve an overall mark of at least 50%, to pass this subject.
- Assessment in this subject is consistent with and informed by the AIIHE Assessment Policy and Procedure.
| Assessment Type | Due Date | Weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment 1: Portfolio in-class assessment | Weeks 3, 6, 8 | 30% |
| Assessment 2: In-Class Practical Assessment (Individual) | Week 9 | 30% |
| Assessment 3: Individual Report and Presentation | Week 11, 13 | 40% |
Learning Resources
AIIHE will update the topic coverage of the subject and the available relevant learning resources at the time of subject delivery. In the interim, AIIHE provides the following indicative list of relevant reference material. AIIHE also subscribes to eLearning Resources through the Canvas portal, and where relevant material is available, AIIHE will seek to source reference material from this system for staff and student access.
