Subject Description
MIT8102 Database Systems and Management provides students with essential skills to design, implement, and manage database systems. The subject covers key topics in information organisation using relational and non-relational database models and focuses on using Structured Query Language (SQL) including database integrity, and data normalisation. The subject emphasises the importance of data integrity, adherence to privacy regulations and security. From conceptualising data models to implementing practical database solutions, students will develop an understanding of how databases serve organisational information systems.
Subject Type
☒ Core
Study Mode: Face to face on site
Study Load: Full-time
Learning Topics
- Database concepts and models
- Relational design and entity–relationship modelling
- SQL and database normalisation
- Transaction management and database administration
- Database security and non-relational databases
Subject Learning Outcomes
- Apply theoretical principles of relational database modelling, design and management to solve complex data challenges in modern organisations.
- Examine complex business rules and data models to propose database ERD solutions and transform them into SQL programming for database implementation and management.
- Analytically construct a well-structured normalised database from a conceptual data model design, employing concurrency and security modelling techniques and tools.
- Collaborate to plan and implement a solution for a secure complex database challenge.
- Contextualise the ethical and societal aspects of data management, and generate culturally sensitive, secure, and ethical solutions for database challenges.
Assessment
AIIHE uses a variety of assessment tools to guide and assess each student’s achievement of the subject learning outcomes. In this subject, students undertake students will demonstrate their critical knowledge and skills in the use of database tools and techniques, students will be evaluated in their critical understanding of database concepts, sql knowledge and basic elements of database design, and students will create groups to develop an approach to solve a case study and present their work. These tasks assess the knowledge, applied skills, critical analysis, communication and collaborative capabilities relevant to the subject.
Summary of Assessment
- Students must attempt all assessment tasks, and achieve an overall mark of at least 50%, to pass this subject.
- Assessment in this subject is consistent with and informed by the AIIHE Assessment Policy and Procedure.
| Assessment Type | Due Date | Weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment 1: Practical Skills Assessments | Week 4, 6, 9 | 40% |
| Assessment 2: In-Class Assessment | Week 2, 5, 11 | 20% (6%, 6%, 8%) |
| Assessment 3: Group Report and Presentation: | Week 8, 12, 13 | 40% |
Learning Resources
AIIHE will update the topic coverage of the subject and the available relevant learning resources at the time of subject delivery. In the interim, AIIHE provides the following indicative list of relevant reference material. AIIHE also subscribes to eLearning Resources through the Canvas portal, and where relevant material is available, AIIHE will seek to source reference material from this system for staff and student access.
